The re-fixed provincial cross country takes place on Sunday 14th Feb in Kilmacow, Co Kilkenny. This is an ideal opportunity for teams to stretch their legs before the National Inter clubs. The Carlow bypass is now open and reduces the journey to South Kilkenny. With entries for a club team only €15 for up to 10 runners it is also great value for money. The original entries still stand but we will take late entries on the day. The races also incorporate inter county Championships, entry fees €20 per team. Events kick off with the juvenile relays at 12 midday. Junior Women 3K at 1pm, junior men 6K at 1.20pm, senior women 5K at 1.50pm and senior men 10K at 2.20pm. Looking forward to having representation from all over Leinster.

Colin Quirke of Crusaders AC broke the Under 23 Indoor Shot Putt record On Saturday 6th of February in Norman

Colin Quirke of Crusaders AC broke the Under 23 Indoor Shot Putt record On Saturday 6th of February in Norman Oklahoma at an all comers meeting. Colin hit 16.90m on his third throw winning the competition and breaking the Irish record of 16.66m that was set by Eoin Leen in 2003.

At the Woodie’s DIY Irish Indoor championships Caoimhe King from Westport AC broke her own Irish junior record with a jump of 12.22m for second place in the triple jump behind Mary McLoone from Tir Chonaill AC, who won with 12.50m.

Mark Kenneally finished sixth in the European Club cross country Cup in Bilbao Spain, with his Clonliffe Harriers team ninth. Clonliffe Harriers junior team were sixth in their event.

McNeese State sophomore David Rooney set a school and complex record in the mile run as he led the Cowboys during the running of the school’s Jeff Davis Bank McNeese indoor meet on Friday.

The Dublin, Ireland native posted a 4:07.90 clocking in only his third gallop in the indoor mile. That broke the school record of 4:11.46 that had been set by Kris Gilmore in 2002 and knocked off the complex record of 4:08 that was recorded by Lamar’s Alfred Trejo in 1984.

It’s the top time in the Southland Conference this season and was also only two seconds off the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA championship meet.
It was mainly a matter of getting off to a good start for Rooney. And, he was helped in this effort by teammate Michael Dyer who posed as his pacer.
“He definitely helped,” Rooney said as he ran the first 400 meters in 60 seconds, had a 2:05 clocking for 800 meters and 3:06 for 1000 meters.
Dyer gave it his all as he ran the first 1,000 meters and then went to the sidelines.
“It’s a great feeling to break the record,” said Rooney. “That’s what I wanted to do.”

Athletics Ireland has announced their initial team selection for the IAAF World Indoor Championships which will take place in Doha, Qatar from the 12-14th of March. The team will include Derval O’Rourke (Leevale AC) who set an Irish Record of 7.84 seconds to take the World Indoor title in 2006. O’Rourke opened up her indoor season at the Woodie’s DIY Senior Indoor Championships this weekend. She produced a solid performance, following a return from injury to win the Women’s 60m hurdles in 8.18 seconds. After placing fourth at the World Track and Field Championships in Berlin last year, the Cork woman is focused firmly on making the podium in Doha.

Clare Brady (Celbridge AC) who is now coached by former Irish sprint international Gary Ryan, will compete in the Women’s 60m. Brady was an impressive winner of the Women’s 60m final at the Senior Indoor Championship. The Kildare athlete ran a personal best of 7.35 seconds in the final inside the qualifying standard for the World Indoor Championships of 7.40 seconds.

Ferrybank’s Kelly Proper will compete in the Long Jump after achieving the qualification standard when breaking her own Irish Record at the Vienna Gala in January. Proper jumped 6.62m, an improvement on the 6.58m she jumped at the European Indoor Championships last year.

Deirdre Byrne of Sli Cualann AC will compete in the 3000m. Byrne achieved the qualification standard at the European Indoor Championships in Turin last year. Byrne ran 9.00.67 minutes to make the final at these championships, inside the qualification standard of 9.03.00. The Wicklow woman took the 3000m national title at the weekend in 9.03.52 minutes.

Following her performance at the National Championships Kelly McNeice (City of Lisburn) will compete in the 1500m. McNeice won in 4:14.63, a time that qualified her for the World Indoor championships and vastly improves on her previous indoor best of 4:21.01 from 2007.

David McCarthy of Le Cheile AC, currently the only male representative on the team, will line up in the Men’s 800m. McCarthy set a personal indoor best at the Indoor Classic in Vienna on the 2nd of February, running 1:48.29 minutes. This time was comfortably inside the 1:48.50 qualifying standard for the World Indoor championships.

All of the selected athletes will compete in this UK Indoor Championships in Sheffield this weekend. David Gillick of Dundrum South Dublin has not been announced as part of the team but there is still time for selection as the final team will be announced on the 1st of March.

Day 2 of the Woodie’s DIY Irish Indoor championships produced another day of very interesting competition, with plenty to talk about. Athletes delight at their performances was very obvious all day, and none was as delighted than Colin Costello from Star of the Sea who won the 1,500m.

The former European junior 1,500m champion has endured a long period of injury, and, as he described it himself “a taste of the good life that relegated running into second place”. His Arkansas scholarship also suffered, but now he is back with coach Robert Denmead and is fast returning to his best.

James O’Hare from East Down did most of the front running before Conor Healy from Clonliffe Harriers took from over with two laps remaining. All the time Costello remained well placed and then sprinted for home with just under a lap to go. The result was never in doubt after that and in the end he proved a comfortable winner, with Healy second and Andrew Monaghan from Lagan Valley third.

The women’s 1,500m saw Deirdre Byrne from Sli Cualannn AC back on track after her 3k win yesterday. Once again she took the lead and pushed the pace before stepping out to lane 2 at the bell to allow Kelly McNiece from City of Lisburn through, and she duly won in a time of 4:14.63, a time that qualifies her for the World indoor championships and vastly improves on her previous indoor best of 4:21.01 from 2007.

Brian Gregan from Clonliffe Harriers ‘fell asleep’ yesterday in the qualifying heats and instead of the main event in the quarter he ran the ‘B’ final instead. He ran a tremendous race though and won impressively with a new PB into the bargain. He admits his mistake from yesterday and said ‘it won’t happen again’. The inter varsities is his next outing.
In the ‘A’ final NickHogan from DSD AC, fastest in the heats yesterday, repeated his performance and won comfortably in 48.59, with Tim Crowe from Dooneen AC adding silver to his Irish junior silver.

Jo Patterson from Ballymena & Antrim led from the gun in the women’s 400m and then had to withstand a very strong challenge from Claire Mooney from Naas AC to win in a time of 56.43 to Mooney’s 56.60.

Kieran Kelly from Fr. Murphy AC set a new championship best performance in the shot with a throw of 18.85m, well clear of second placed Jamie Stevenson from Essex Beagles in England with 16.98m.

Claire Brady’s season of improvement continued in the final of the 60m. The Celbridge AC athlete ran a tremendous final and won very impressively from Ailis McSweney from Leevale in second and Niamh Whelan from Ferrybank third. Brady’s winning time of 7.35 was inside the qualifying standard for the World championships and it puts her in sight of Anna Boyle’s Irish record of 7.30.

Derval O’Rourke from Leevale was thrilled with her 8.18 wining time in the 60m hurdles. After a month of rest due to injury she did her first hurdles session last Tuesday and went into today’s race in a nervous state. Her immediate reaction after the race was ‘I’m so relieved to have that out of the way’. She heads to Doha quietly confident of putting in a medal winning performance.

Ciara Mageean from City of Lisburn took the lead from the start of the 800m and simply outran all her rivals as she sprinted to victory. Her winning time of 2:07.82 is a new Irish junior record, bettering Arlene Smith’s 1991 record of 2:08.74.

The men’s 800m never turned out to be the race everyone expected, but it proved to be a personal triumph for James McIlroy from Ballymena & Antrim. He was close to the front from the gun and sprinted well clear on the last lap to win very easily in a time of 1:52.23, with David McCarthy from Le Cheile AC second.

Paul Hession from Ahenry AC put in another polished performance to win the 60m in a time of 6.75, with Dean Adams from Ballymena & Antrim again reducing his PB to.89.

Eoin Hannon from Tullamore Harriers added 8cm to his long jump PB when he won the long jump with a leap of 7.40cm, while Bary Pender from St. Abban’s won the high jump with 2.15m.

The Woodie’s DIY Irish Indoor championships at the Odyssey attracted big entries in most events, with ten heats necessary in the men’s 60m, while five heats were necessary in the men’s 800m. Day 2 of the championships promises to be one of the best in years.

The women’s 60m required three heats and is shaping up to a great final tomorrow. Claire Brady from Celbridge AC is having a tremendous season, with her times improving with every outing. Today continued that trend with a fluent display of sprinting that saw her reduce her best time to 7.43, bettering the 7.48 achieved in London last weekend.
Ailis McSweeney from Leevale won the first heat in 7.58, with Niamh Whelan from Ferrybank AC winning the second heat in 7.61.

Robert Heffernan from Togher AC confirmed his standing as the leading track walker in the country with another superb win in the 5k walk to show his well being. Fellow Olympians Colin Griffin from Ballinamore AC and Jamie Costin from West Waterford AC filled the minor places.

The women’s 3,000m walk saw Zuzana Malikova from West Waterford AC lead from the gun for an impressive win. The Slovak international was just two seconds outside the Slovak record for the distance. Laura Reynolds from Mohill AC came through strongly for second, with Irish junior record holder Kate Veale from West Waterford AC third.

Deirdre Byrne from Sli Cualann AC took the lead from the gun in the women’s 3,000m and was never headed as she produced an impressive gun to tape victory. Hazel Murphy from DSD put in a strong performance to finish second with Kerry Harty from Newcastle third. Byrne and Murphy will be in action again next weekend at the AAA championships.
Kelly Proper from Ferrybank AC duly won another national long jump title with a best effort of 6.35m.

The men’s 800m final tomorrow is set to be a cracker after David McCarthy from Le Cheile and James McIlroy from Balmena & Antrim AC recorded impressive wins in their respective heats of the 800m. Indeed, McIlroy broke the stadium record with his winning time of 1:48.64.

Nick Hogan from DSD AC recorded the fastest time of 48.57 in winning his heat of the 400m, while Paul Hession from Athenry AC was fastest of the qualifiers in the men’s 60m with 6.88, with Dean Adams from Ballymena & Antrim also under 7 seconds with 6.92.

Alan O’Brien from Crusaders showed a tremendous turn of foot in the closing stages of the men’s 3,000m to win impressively. He has no immediate indoor plans, explaining that he is concentrating on base work with a view to next year’s European T&F championships. He will line up in the Woodie’s DIY inter club cross country championships next month and should be a strong contender.

Claire Wilkinson from Ballymena & Antrim won the pole vault with a clearance of 3.90m, a new national U23 record, while David Donegan from Clonliffe Harriers won the men’s pole vault with 4.85m.
