The American collegiate regional championships were staged yesterday with some great performances by Irish athletes. The scene is now set for the national championships on Monday week in Terre Haute Indiana.

In Boston David McCarthy (West Waterford AC) had an excellent run to finish fourth in a time of 31:07 for the 10k distance. Conditions were extremely tough on a very muddy course after some serious rainfall. Craig Murphy (Togher AC) was a creditable 37th in his first year at Iona College.

In the women’s race Breffni Twohig (Dundrum South Dublin AC) ran a super race to finish tenth, with clubmate Laura Huet also making the top ten in 18th place.

David Rooney (Raheny Shamrocks AC) was another in top form to place 8th in 31:02 at the South Central championships to guarantee his place at nationals as an individual. He was well placed amongst the leaders for the first half of the race.

At the South region championships Ciaran O’Lionaird (Leevale AC) was 20th in 31:07.
