Linda Byrne of Dundrum South Dublin who achieved the Olympic qualification standard in the Dublin Marathon is set to compete in the Woodie’s DIY Inter Club Cross Country Championships in Santry this Sunday. Byrne will be the strong favourite with club-mate and reigning champion Ava Hutchinson, who also achieved the Marathon Olympic standard also in contention. Other likely medal contenders include Una English (DCH AC), Becky Woods (Clonliffe), Gladys Ganiel (North Belfast Hrs) and Orla O’Mahony (Raheny). DSD achieved a clean sweep last year on club titles at these championships and will most likely retain their Senior Women’s title.

Reigning Senior Men’s champion, Joe Sweeney (Dundrum South Dublin AC), who finished fifth at the European Cross Country Championships, will not be competing as he now turns his focus to the track season after taking a two week break. Eddie Mc Ginley (Annadale Striders) and Gary Crossan (Letterkenny) all set to compete. There are over 14 clubs entered into the Senior Men Team competition, with the DSD, Clonliffe Harriers or Raheny the most likely to take the honours.

In the women’s Junior Race, the talented Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (DSD) will be looking to retain her title. Buttner’s club-mate Claire McCarty who finished second in the Inter clubs will most likely also make the podium. Louise Hill-Sterling (Clonliffe Harriers), Isseult O’Donnell and Chloe Doran (Raheny AC) will also be in contention. DSD will be hot favourite’s to take the club title have finishing in a very credible third place at the recent European Clubs’ championships.

With the Junior Inter county champion, Jake Byrne (Mullingar AC) on scholarship at Iona University, Clonmel’s Sean Tobin will be the likely winner of the Junior Men’s Race other contenders include Ian Guiden (Clonliffe), Aaron Hanlon (Clonliffe), Stephen Kerr (Armagh A.C.), Patrick Fagan (Mullingar) and Daragh Fitzibbon (Donore).
