Robert Heffernan (Togher AC) and Olive Loughnane (Loughrea AC) will compete in the Greater Rio International Race Walking Grand Prix this Saturday, 14th April in Portugal. There is a 20km distance on the programme for both the men and women.
Heffernan has recently returned from a period of altitude training in Guadix, Spain and will use the race on Saturday as a hard workout on the road to his ultimate goal; the 50km Race Walk event in the London Olympics. Heffernan is the second fastest of all the entrants for Saturdays race based on seasonal best form, only Petr Trofimov (Russia) has gone quicker. Heffernan finished 6th in his last 20km race in the Lugano Racewalking Grand Prix 1:20:39 on the 18th of March.
Loughnane will compete in the women’s 20km on Sunday and will be aiming to improve on her seasonal best time of 1:32.26, which also came from the Grand Prix in Lugano. Russian athlete Tatiana Sibileva is the fastest in the field on paper 1:26.59 and will be the favourite to take the title on Saturday.
