Once again there were big numbers of Irish athletes competing at home and abroad this weekend. The Mt SAC Relays in California was a popular choice for many, with David Rooney (Raheny Shamrock AC) probably the happiest after taking 14 seconds off his 5,000m best when winning comfortably in a time of 13:53.04.
Darren McBrearty (Letterkenny AC) was fifth in the 1,500m in a time of 3:43.75, just a second off his best time for the distance.
Orla Drumm (UCC AC) clocked the fastest 1,500m time by an Irish woman with a time of 4:15.97 in a mile race where she finished seventh in 4:36.81.

At the Bryan Clay meet in California Steven Colvert (Crusaders AC) got his season off to a good start with a second place finish in the 100m in 10.55 and 20.93 for fourth in the 200m.

Breandan O’Neill (Dundrum South Dublin AC) won the 10,000m at the ACC championships in 29:30.00 after taking the lead with four laps to go. He followed up with a fifth place finish in the 5,000m in 14:11.12.

Under virtually perfect weather conditions, Fout and O Neill were among a lead group that pulled the field through the early stages of the 25-lap race. With six laps to go, Fout began pushing the pace, with O Neill and Virginia’s Sean Keveren following along.

O Neill made his play for the front with four laps remaining, opening up a 25-meter cushion with a strong surge. From there the Sandymount, Ireland native held on for the win in 29:30.00, breaking a 23-year Lannigan Field track record. Keveren clipped Fout (29:32.43) for second.

“That was huge,” FSU coach Bob Braman said afterward. “I felt like all day long our guys did a great job. … I thought we had a great day and I think that kind of stepping up - Markindey [Sineus] may have been the big surprise or O Neill when we win - those are huge. I’m just so excited for these guys. They have a lot of pride in where we are. ”
