Pena Breaks Irish Record

Tori Pena (Finn Valley AC) set a New Irish Pole Vault Record clearing 4.52m at the San Diego Triton Invitational in the USA. The record breaking performance is also the second time this season that Pena has achieved the Olympic Qualification standard of 4.50m. Commenting about the season ahead, Pena said: “Lots of things are coming together with my vault, I’m very pleased and 60+ should be very doable this outdoor season.”

At the prestigious Penn Relays Jake Byrne (Mullingar Harriers AC) finished second in the 5,000m in a personal best time of 14.01.99. Patricia Barry (Ferrybank AC) stepped up to the 10,000m and recorded a time of 35.35.45 and Craig Murphy (Togher AC) did likewise clocking a time of 29.37.55. Charlotte French O’Carroll (Dundrum South Dublin AC) was victorious in her section of the 3,000m in a time of 9.20.72.

Many of Irelands top long distance athletes including Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC), Mark Christie (Mullingar Harriers), Alistair Cragg (Clonliffe Harriers AC) and Joseph Sweeney (Dundrum South Dublin AC) will be in action later this evening at the 2012 Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational.
