Irish distance running is experiencing something of a revival in recent times, and it was evident again over the past weekend. Biggest improvement was achieved by Breandan O’Neill (Dundrum South Dublin AC) who competed in one of the 5,000m races at the Payton Jordan meet in California. Content to stay near the back of the field for the first half of the race, he then made steady progress to put himself close to the leaders with a lap to go to finish fifth in a time of 13:41.36, a huge improvement on his previous best of 14:10.61 achieved in Manchester in 2009. His time puts him within sight of the European championships qualifying standard of 13:38.00.

After significant progress in the steeplechase, Tomas Cotter (Dunleer AC) turned his attention to the 1,500m at a meet in Kansas, which he won by a huge margin. His time for this ‘solo’ effort was 3:48.09 to improve on his previous best of 3:51.89 from 2010.

Jake Byrne (Mullingar AC), who is just out of junior ranks, as well as being in his first year at Iona College, has been making steady progress all year. At the Penn Relays he was second in one of the 5,000m races in a time of 14:01.99 to improve on the 14:11.41 he set indoors in March.

Orla Drumm (UCC AC) was another in action at Payton Jordan where she finished fifth in one of the 1,500m races. Her time of 4:13.27 was an improvement on her previous best of 4:14:08 achieved last year.

Joe Sweeney (Dundrum South Dublin AC) clocked 28:45.17 in the 10,000m, a big improvement on the 30:49.30 from 2007.

Clubmate Charlotte Ffrench O’Carroll was a convincing winner of one of the 3,000m races at the Drake Relays in a time of 9:20.72, to improve on the 9:29.58 set indoors last year.

Craig Murphy (Togher AC) made his debut over 10,000m at Penn to finish third in a time of 29:37.55.

Biding their time at the back end of a huge lead pack, Fout and O Neill sat back between 10th and 15th place until the pace began to quicken over the final 1600 meters. They began to work their way up the pecking order over the next two laps. O Neill made a big play to stay with the front runners over the final 600 meters, a decision that paid huge dividends.
The ACC 10,000-meter champion, in his first season with the Seminoles, rode his finishing surge to a fifth-place finish in 13:41.56. Not only did the Sandymount, Ireland native shatter his previous career-best by nearly 30 seconds, he registered the second-fastest time in Florida State history.
“It was a great night for our guys,” FSU coach Bob Braman said. “Breandan ran the second-fastest time in school history and Mike was close to his lifetime best, and that’s coming off a brutal ACC double.”
