The 2012 European Track and Field Championships take place from 27th of June until the 1st of July in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in Finland. The 21st running of these championships will see a 26 strong Irish team compete. The team is made up of a mixture of experienced senior athletes along with the new generation of Irish junior athletes coming through into senior level.
Day 1 (27th of June)
Amy Foster (City of Lisburn AC) will get proceedings underway from an Irish perspective when she goes in heat two of the women’s 100m at 8am (Irish time). Foster will need to be in the top three in her heat to secure automatic qualification for the semi final.
Thomas Barr (Ferrybank AC) and Jason Harvey (Crusaders AC) are next in action as they both go in the men’s 400m hurdles heats. Barr will go in the fourth heat which is scheduled for 9.11am while Harvey goes in the sixth heat scheduled for 09.25am.
Next up is Jason Smyth in heat two of the men’s 100m scheduled for 9.48am. Brian Gregan (Clonliffe Harriers AC) begins his campaign at 11.35am in heat one of the men’s 400m and Jessie Barr (Ferrybank AC) follows shortly after in heat two of the women’s 400m hurdles at 12.38pm.
Joanne Cuddihy (Kilkenny City Harriers) will begin her championships in heat four of the women’s 400m first round at 4.14pm. If Jason Smyth and Amy Foster advance from the earlier heats of the 100m, their scheduled semi finals are at 6.05pm (100m Women) and 6.20pm (100m Men).
