Irish Junior record holder Mark English (Letterkenny AC) and reigning world youth walk champion Kate Veale (West Waterford AC) will lead a 15 strong Irish squad competing at the IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships in Barcelona from the 10-15th of July.
English will compete in the 800m having run an impressive 1.45.77 this season to break his own National Junior Record. This time moved him to fifth on the Irish all-time list, ahead of Marcus O’Sullivan (1.45.87). English recently ran 1.46.20 to place fourth at the prestigious Atletismo Madrid Meeting, signifying that he is in good shape heading into the championships. English starts his campaign ot 11.20am on Friday the 13th of July in the heats of the men’s 800m.
Veale has been in good form all season having finished sixth in the IAAF World Cup of Race Walking in Saransk, Russia. Veale will challenge for a top position in Barcelona when she goes in the 10,000m Walk at 08.30am on Wednesday, 11th of July.
The first of the Irish in action at the championships will be the 1500m athletes. Ruairi Finnegan (Letterkenny AC) and Sean Tobin (Clonmel AC) will take to the line at 9.05am for the heats of the men’s 1500m. While 16 year old Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (D.S.D AC) will compete in the women’s equivalent at 9.40am.
