Shane Fitzsimons (Mullingar Harriers), winner of the Aviva Irish schools 1,500m earlier this season, recorded another significant achievement when he won the rarely contested 1,000m distance at Wednesday night’s Dublin graded meet held at Irishtown stadium. Always in control of the race he finished well clear of the field in a time of 2:24.39 for a new Irish Youths record to better the 2:34.53 set by Mark English two years ago.
