
The Woodie’s DIY Masters Track and Field Championships will take place this Saturday the 18th of August in Tullamore Harriers Stadium.
In the sprint events, Geraldine Finnegan (Dunleer AC) will be hoping to add this years V3 400m, 800m, Shot Putt and 200m titles to her collection, however she will face stiff competition from Moira Peppard (Trim AC) in the 200m who recorded the fastest women’s time in last years V3 100m in 14.07 seconds.
Reigning V4 100m, 200m, and 400m champion Kathryn Walley (Clonliffe) will also be hoping to keep each of her three sprint titles at this year’s competition. With over thirty entries at last years championships, the men’s 400m is looking likely to be an highly competitive event with just under fifty participants entered ranging from the V1 to V9 age categories.
Martina O’Dwyer (Carrick-on-Suir AC) is the likely favourite for the V1 women’s 1500m winning well clear of the field at last years competition in a time of 4.66.17, with Tony Kelleher (Togher AC) the favourite to pick up the men’s V2 800m & 1500m title.
Derek Gillespie (Rosses AC) and Liz Coomey (Bandon AC) are the favourites going into the high jump with this years V2 Indoor champ Cera Nolan (Naas AC) and Tomas Griffin (Riocht AC) looking likely to make podium positions in the V2 long jump categories.
The men and women’s throws events are likely to be stacked full of competition, always proving to be popular events at these championships. Notably at last years championships, Phil Conway (Crusaders AC), one of the leading throws coaches in the country, won the V6 shot with a throw of 12.60m, a new World age group record.
There are numerous entries in the V9, V10 and V11 age group events including Hugh Gallagher (Milford AC), Pat Naughton (Nenagh Olympic AC), and Micheal O’Beirne (Dundrum AC) to name a few.
Donore Harriers will be hoping to fight off Tullamore Harriers on their home track in order to maintain their relay title in the men’s 4×100m as will Celbridge AC in the women’s relay.
Participants are reminded that there are NO ENTRIES being taken on the day of the event.
