Former Donore Harriers athlete Cumann Clancy Age 90 has died in the New York. Cumann was Irish Discus champion for many years and in 1948 won the British AAA discus championship. He represented Ireland at the 1948 London Olympic Games with his good friend Jimmy Riordan.
Originall from Co. Galway, he broke the Irish Discus record on several occasions and accepted a scholarship to Villanova University following the 1948 Olympic Games. There he joined up with clubmate and friend Jimmy Riordan and were the first Irish athletes to take up Athletics scholarship to American Universities. He later became a very successful business man, married an American lady and set up an Insurance company, which is today managed by his son. He regularly visited Ireland.
