Action at the World University Games concluded this past weekend with a record five-medal tally by Irish track and field athletes during the week’s programme.
Early in the week, Derval O’Rourke made the journey from a rain drenched Helsinki to a sun drenched Izmir and took a bronze medal in the 100m hurdles. Her Leevale clubmate Ailis McSweeney won a silver medal later that evening in the 100m. A great evening for Cork athletes.
Paul Hession was another athlete who found the sunnier Izmir more conducive to sprinting and he won a bronze in the 200m. Then Jolene Byrne, after finishing sixth in the 1500m, finished a battling third in the women’s 5000m the next day.
Finally, Derval O’Rourke, Anna Boyle, Ailish McSweeney and Emily Maher combined to take bring Ireland into third place in the 4×100m relay and completed this remarkably successful championships for Ireland.
