Tom Carey, Eileen O’Keeffe and Fionnuala Britton all progressed to the finals of their events on Day 2 of the World University Games in Belgrade.

Carey was an automatic qualifier when finishing third in his heat of the 400m hurdles in 52.42.

O’Keeffe had little difficulty in qualifying for the final of the hammer with a throw of 68.08m, while Britton was another to make it comfortably through with a second place finish in her heat of the 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 10:05.89.

Claire Bergin and Fiona O’Friel both made their exits from the 400m at the semi final stage.

Joanna Patterson and Joanne Cuddihy compete in the 200m heats tomorrow, and Brona Furlong takes her place in the 400m hurdles final.
