AAI Indoor Games

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

The Nenagh indoor complex was host today to a very competitive AAI Games. Some very interesting competition sent most athletes home in a happy frame of mind.

The walkers got the show off the ground with Gillian O’Sullivan making it two wins in the space of a week after winning the Munster indoor title a week earlier. She took the lead from the gun in this 5,000m event and eased away from her rivals as the race progressed. Olive Loughnane from Loughrea walked well to take second ahead of Zuzanna Malikova from Slovakia.

Jamie Costin had a good blow-out in the men’s race. He also raced into the lead from the gun and won easily.

His return to competitive walking has been nothing short of phenomenal after a car crash prior to competing in the Greece Olympics threatened his life. Training is going well with him in spite of the back pain that rears up every so often. These days he treats these problems as he would any other injury and just gets on with it. Main target for the year is the qualifying standard for the 50km World track and field championships in Japan in August.

Orla Drumm from UCC had a gun to tape win in the 1,000m. She was impressive and was never threatened as she coasted to victory. She plans to race in the Scottish championships next weekend and will follow up with a race in Dusseldorf and then it’s on to the AAA’s.

For many the big surprise of the day came from Joe Warne from Dohenys in the men’s 1,000m. For the uninitiated Dohenys AC is based in Dunmanway in west Cork.
He took over the lead from Emmet Dunleavy from Sligo with just over two laps remaining and then coasted to victory. Interestingly, he flew in from Portugal, where he had two weeks of warm weather training with his DCU colleagues, just hours before his race. Last year he won the national junior 800m title in a close finish in Tullamore.

Afterwards he said he was surprised at how easy the race went for him. He hopes to run in the Scottish championships but that will depend on college exams.

Had Carl McNamara from Leevale dipped at the finish of the 60m at the Munster championships last week there is no doubt but that he would have won. Today he continued his good form with a good win in the 60m after earlier clocking the fastest time in the 200m races.

Nick Hogan from DSD clocked the fastest time in the last of three heats in the men’s 400m with a handy 50.32 to win.

Juniors dominated with Ciaran O’Driscoll Collins repeating last weeks Munster win, coming from behind to lead in the last 50m for an impressive win in the first race.

The second race saw a great battle between juniors, with Jamie Davis holding off the persistent challenge of Finbarr Horgan from Clonmel, with another junior Adrian Varley from DSD third.

Kelly Proper from Ferrybank had a busy afternoon with good performances in the long jump, 60m and 200m. Ferrybank were well represented and Mairead Deevy won a close 400m from clubmate Jessie Barr.
