Colin Costello Victorious at Great North Mile Junior Race

27 September 2004

Colin Costello (Star of the Sea) scored an excellent international victory at the Great North Mile in Newcastle on Saturday. Running against the best juniors in Britain, Costello stormed away at the finish to win impressively with England's Gary Davenport in second place. The Meath man's winning time was 4 minutes and 18 seconds.

In the women's junior race, Ireland's Azmera Gebrezgi narrowly failed to emulate Costello's performance as she finished an excellent second to Scotland's Morag McLarty. Gebrezgi and Costello will soon be joining forces as have both recently accepted places on a new scholarship programme at Dublin City University.

Sonia O'Sullivan was 6th and Catherina McKiernan 12th in the Great North Run on Sunday as the race was won by O'Sullivan's training partner and World Cross Country Champion Benita Johnson of Australia in a time of 67 minutes and 55 seconds.
