Gillick and Cragg Take Ireland to 4th on Medal Table at European Indoors

7 March 2005

Double Gold thanks to David Gillick and Alistair Cragg led Ireland to an unprecedented 4th place in the medals table at the European Indoor Championships in Madrid over the weekend.

Cragg's success was widely expected as he entered the 3000m event as very warm favourite and he did not disappoint in the least with a dominating run to Gold. Gillick was only the 2nd fastest on paper of the 400m entries but produced a run of incredible strength and composure to take Ireland's first sprinting Gold medal at a major Championships since the 1932 Olympic Games, beating the hometown favourite in the process.

Other highlights from the weekend included Derval O'Rourke's National Record in the heats of the women's 60m hurdles with an 8.02 clocking to lower her lifetime best by .04 of a second, and Paul Hession's 20.80 personal best in the heats of the 200m before an unfortunate lane draw effectively ended his chances of progression to the final.
