Championships Best Performances Galore At GloHealth Champs

Day two of the GloHealth National Juvenile Indoor Championships took place on Sunday, 22nd of March with a packed programme of events with athletes vying for national titles in the U12-U19 age categories. Numerous Championship Best Performances (CBP’s) were set on an exciting day of competition in AIT International Arena, Athlone.

60m & 400m

Phoebe Murphy (Ferrybank AC) scorched down the track to win the U18 60m title in a time of 7.68 seconds which was a new CBP. Aisling Forkan (Swinford AC) finished second in the final having earlier broken the championship record in the heats by running 7.68. Eoin Doherty (Tallaght AC) dipped under seven seconds as he won the boy’s U19 title in a time of 6.97 with Sinead Treacy (Craughwell AC) winning the girl’s equivalent in 7.84. Ryan Murray (Bree AC) won the boy’s U18 60m in a time of 7.13.

Rising sprint star Ciara Neville (Emerald AC) easily won the U16 girl’s event setting a new CBP of 7.51 while David Murphy (Gowran AC) doing likewise in the boy’s event equalling the championship best with a 7.09 winning run. There were two more CBP’s set in the U14 60m with Niamh Foley (St Mary’s Limerick) running 7.93 and Mathew Buckley (Ratoath AC) running 7.63 to win their respective titles. Sabia Doyle (Menapians AC) won the U13 title after equalling the championship best of 8.02 in the earlier heats.  Finally Nkemjika Onwumereh (MSB AC) set a new CBP with a winning time of 8.24 in the boy’s U12 event.

Jenna Bromell (Emerald AC) dominated the U19 400m winning the title and setting a new CBP of 55.28 seconds in the process. John Fitzsimons (Kildare AC) was equally impressive as he set a new CBP of 49.59 on his way to victory in the U18 event.

1500m & Walks & 600m

The pick of the 1500m races was the boy’s U19 contest as Jack O’Leary (Mullingar Harriers AC) and Pierre Murchan (Celtic AC) going head to head. O’Leary proved the stronger over the final lap to win the title in 4.00.09 with Murchan right behind in second place in a time of 4.00.22. After a powerful sprint over the final lap Nadia Power (Templeogue AC) won the U18 1,500m title setting a new CBP of 4.38.65. Louise Shanahan (Leevale AC) in her final year as a juvenile signed off in style with a victory in the U19 event in a new CBP of 4.43.97.

Gearoid McMahon (Shannon AC) dominated the U16 1.5k walk setting a new championship best of 6.33.39 in the process. Aaron Egan (Clonmel AC) was a clear winner of the U19 title in a time of 6.07.69 with Claire Kennedy (St Coca’s AC) winning the girl’s title in a time of 6.57.90.

Emma Moore (Galway City Harriers AC) broke the championship best in the U12 girl’s 600m with her winning time of 1.45.53 with Oisin Kelly (Cranford AC) taking the boy’s title in a time of 1.44.86. In the girl’s U13 event Neasa Reilly (Blackrock-Louth) edged ahead over the last 50m to win the national title in a fast 1.42.47 with Nathan Cremin Sheehy (St Marys-Limerick) the boy’s winner (1.40.91)

Field

Megan Lenihan (North Cork AC) launched the shot put out to a new CBP of 12.79m to claim the U13 national title. Sophie Meredith (St Marys Limerick AC) was back in action on day two of the championships this time winning the U15 long jump title with a jump of 5.46m.

Keith Marks (Cushinstown AC) added to his high jump gold from yesterday by winning the U19 long jump title with a distance of 6.59m. Reece Ademola (Leevale AC) was another of those excelling in the jumps by setting a new CBP of 4.86m on his way to winning the U13 title. Fiona O’Shea (Dooneen AC) won the U19 triple jump title with a distance of 11.33m.
