Derval O’Rourke Retires From Athletics

Sprint Hurdler, Derval O’Rourke (Leevale AC) has today announced her retirement from  an outstanding athletics career. The Cork woman is a multiple medal winner at major championships and was crowned World 60m Hurdles Champion in 2006. She is a twice European silver medallist in 100m Hurdles (2006 and 2010).  At the European Indoor Championships she secured bronze medals in 2009 and 2013 in 60m Hurdles. In 2009 she produced one of her stand out performances of her impressive athletics career finishing fourth at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Berlin.

O’Rourke is a three time Olympian (2004, 2008, 2012) and is the national record holder in the 60m hurdles (7.84) and 100m hurdles (12.65).

President of Athletics Ireland Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin commented “Derval is one of Ireland’s most outstanding athletes in our athletics history.  She is an inspiration to all up and coming athletes”.

Athletics Ireland CEO John Foley wished Derval O’Rourke all the best in her retirement: “Derval is one of Ireland’s most successful track and field athletes.  Her achievements, talent and commitment to her discipline during an outstanding career are to be celebrated. All of the Irish Athletics community wish her the best. I would also like to commend Sean and Terrie Cahill for the contribution they made to Derval’s career.”
