Deirdre Ryan Sets New Irish High Jump Record

16 January 2005

Deirdre Ryan produced a scintillating performance at the AAI Games on Sunday when she added 2cm to her own National Indoor High Jump Record in Nenagh.

Her performance of 1.88m surpassed the previous record of 1.86m which she had held jointly with Sharon Foley and secured her qualification for next month's European Indoor Championships in Madrid.

Elsewhere, Ailish McSweeney was a surprise victor in the 60m over reigning National Champion Ciara Sheehy, Robert Heffernan was within 5 seconds of his National 3,000m Walk record and Jer O'Donoghue was a victor in the 60m, adding a 6.83 win to his highly impressive 6.79 season opener last weekend at the Munster Indoor Championships.

On Saturday in Loughborough National 60m hurdles record holder Derval O'Rourke opened her season with an 8.25 clocking for second behind Britain's Sarah Claxton who ran 8.09. Emily Maher set a pb for 60m with 7.45 while 200m specialist Paul Hession got his indoors underway with a 6.92 performance over 60 metres.
