English world standard leads Irish results

English runs world qualifying standard

Mark English (UCD) ran an excellent season’s best of 1:45.42 over 800m at the Stockholm Diamond League to qualify for the world championships in London in August.

English finished second behind Thijmen Kupers (Netherlands) who won in 1:45.02. The 24-year-old is scheduled to compete in Sligo on Wednesday over 500m with his fellow UCD athlete Ciara Mageean down for the women’s 800m.

In the last ten days English, Mageean in the 1500m and Thomas Barr (Ferrybank) in the 400m hurdles have all run world qualifying standards. Last week Marcus Lawler (SLOT) became the third fastest Irish man in history over 100m with a 10.30 clocking in Germany. 

Michaela Walsh (Swinford) highlighted fine Irish performances at the England U20 and U23 Championships in Bedford. She won double gold in the U20 age group on Saturday – winning the shot put with a national junior record of 16.13m and the hammer with a best of 62.62m. Walsh went on to finish second in the U23 shot put today while winning the hammer once more with 62.71m. There was plenty of excellent performances at the championships which are listed below including Matthew Behan (Crusaders) in the 110m hurdles and Brandon Arrey (Blarney/Inniscara) in the 400m who recorded European U23 qualifying standards with Niamh Fogarty baggin a second European U20 discus mark. At the Leinster Juveniles Kate O'Connor leapt 6.10m for a European U20 standard. 

At the Irish Runner 5 mile in the Phoenix Park on Saturday, Clonmel’s Kevin Maunsell won in 24:18 with DSD’s Laura Shaughnessy first woman in 27:53 in very warm conditions.

Athletics Leinster sent 12 athletes to the CSIT Games in Riga with all of the athletes returning with medals. Some of the highlight results include Stephen Gaffney winning the 100m in 10.78 (1.6) and 200m in 21.52 (0.8), Shane Fitzsimons the 800m in 1:51.05, Keith Marks second in the long jump with 7.41m (1.4), Stephen Rice recording a personal best in the javelin with 65.48m and Sophie Becker with a European U23 B standard in the 200m with 24.42 (-1.2 ).
