Away from the action in Athlone European 800m Bronze Medallist Mark English (UCD AC) secured the 800m qualification time for European Indoors at the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham running 1.47.17 for sixth place which was inside the standard (1.48.50). The race was won by Kenya’a Jeremiah Kipkorir Mutai in 1.45.93. 

English will now contest the final of the 800m at the GloHealth Senior Indoor Championships on Sunday, 22nd of February at 2.40pm.

Treacy & Tarplee also in action

Sara Treacy (Dunboyne AC) and Claire Tarplee (Dundrum South Dublin AC) were also in action in the respective 3,000m and 1 mile events. Both athletes were in search of the elusive qualifications times for the European Indoor Championships of 9.00.00 (3,000m) and 4.34 (1 mile).

Treacy clocked her second fastest time ever for the 3,000m distance (9.08.40) to finish ninth behind the winner Habiba Ghribi of Turkey in a time of 8.46.61. Tarplee also missed out on qualification when she finished eighth in 4.37.39. The 1 mile race was won in Axumawit Embaye of Ethiopia in a time of 4.23.50.
