Shercock AC Junior Men Gain Promotion in Europe

27 September 2004

At the European Champion Clubs Cup for Juniors in Gateshead, Shercock’s junior men’s team put in an impressive overall performance in Group C to finish first among the qualifying nations and in the runner-up position overall behind hosts Gateshead Harriers who were competing as guests.

There were gold medal wins for Shercock by Padraig White in the hammer, Leslie Leung in the long jump and triple jump and James King in the 800m. Silver medals were won by James Ruxton in the 400m hurdles and Kevin McCloy in the 400m while bronze was secured by Gerard O’Reilly (200m), Caolan Flanagan (100m), David Shields (HJ) and Sean Smith (3000m).

At the halfway stage Shercock were leading the competition by a small margin from Gateshead Harriers, however in the closing stages they were overtaken by the host club and came under pressure from Portugal and Switzerland.

With the final result depending on the two relays the Shercock 4x100m team of O’Reilly, Daly, Flanagan and Leung held their own to take third place behind winners Switzerland and hosts Gateshead. The 4x400m team then had to finish ahead of Switzerland to secure Shercock’s position and a determined run by O’Reilly, King, McCloy and Ruxton saw them move up the field from fifth on the first lap to second place on the finish line behind Gateshead Harriers to win the silver medals in a time of 3:25.

Shercock captain Michael Muldoon accepted the winner's trophy on behalf of the club and competition secretary Paul Zens confirmed that Shercock had gained promotion for Ireland to group B for the 2005 competition.
