‘Exceptional quality’ finish to Autumn season for Throws Squads

POSTED:

‘Exceptional Quality’ was the summary given by Terry McHugh at Saturday’s National Javelin squad session in Morton Stadium in Santry. The six time Olympian said that this year’s group is the best group that he has ever seen in an Irish National squad and he complimented the athletes and coaches for the work that they have been putting in over the last few months. The javelin group came together for the 3rd time over the last 7 weeks and the regular sessions are proving hugely beneficial.

The other throws groups were not on a day off. The Hammer, Discus and Shot Put athletes came under the eye of Strength and Conditioning coach Tommy Mooney in what proved to be a very productive session focusing on Functional Movement fundamentals and some technical aspects of Strength training. The motivated group made huge development strides during the day and like their javelin counterparts, the quality level was extremely high considering the young age profile across the groups.

National Throws Coordinator Dave Sweeney was extremely pleased with the outcome of the day and the initial preparations for the 2018 season. ‘These athletes are the future of Irish Throwing and coming together on days like this where they learn together from the coaches and from each other can only be good’. ‘This autumn has seen the squad move their base around to regional locations from Athlone to Tullamore to Santry. He commented on the super reception that the squad had received from each of these quality regional venues, and he is looking forward to further events in 2018.
