GloHealth National Senior Indoors launched

Some of Ireland’s best athletes were on hand to launch the GloHealth National Senior Indoor Championships which take place in AIT International Arena, Athlone on the 27th-28th of February.

The Championships will be televised by RTE and will capture the likes of rising stars Adam McMullen (Crusaders), Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown) and Marcus Lawler (St Laurence O’Toole) who officially launched the championships.

Adam McMullen started his indoor season with a massive leap of 7.70m in Jordanstown. Last year he won the national long jump title to qualify for the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Prague. His ultimate aim is to join the prestigious 8m club in the long jump - breaking that barrier is the mark of a world class long jumper. He will have eyes on a potential spot at the World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon in March.

Elizabeth Morland has been generating headlines since the summer where she finished 10th in the heptathlon at the World Youth Championships in Cali, Columbia. The Dunshaughlin teenager has been in tremendous form of late setting a new junior, U23 and senior pentathlon record at the GloHealth Combined Events Championships and most recently won the junior long jump and the 60m Hurdles at the GloHealth Junior and U23 Indoor Championships.

Carlow’s Marcus Lawler, the fastest Irish schoolboy in history, has been developing into Ireland’s best sprinter and made the final of the 200m at the European U23 Athletics Championships in Tallinn, Estonia last July. He will aim to win the 60m in Athlone and affirm his status as Ireland’s number one sprinter.

Athletics Ireland CEO John Foley said: “I’m excited about the GloHealth National Indoors this year and looking forward to it being televised by our national broadcaster RTE. It will be an excellent opportunity to showcase some of our best talent for not just the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro but further down the line to Tokyo and beyond.”

GloHealth CEO Jim Dowdall said: "The GloHealth National Senior Indoor Championships is an event which requires athletes to push themselves to their full ability. It is exciting to see Ireland’s best athletes come together and compete in what is an exhilarating and challenging event. While tensions are high on the field, nothing can beat that level of competition where the athletes can see all their hard work and training pay off. The electric atmosphere coupled with the adrenaline-inducing competitions make this a wonderful event for spectators and competitors alike."
