Great day of action on Day 1 of GloHealth Leinster Schools Championships

There was a host of excellent performances on Day 1 of the GloHealth Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships in Morton Stadium today (May 11th).

Overcast conditions with occasional light rain didn’t dampen the spirits, or the performances, of Leinster’s best schools’ athletes.

Some the stars of the cross country season were back on show with the minor and junior age categories the main competitors.

Louis O'Loughlin (Moyle Park) who won the GloHealth All Ireland junior boys' cross country title in March won the 800m with ease in 2:05.24.

Sarah Healy (Holy Child Killiney), the intermediate girls' cross country champion, bided her time in the U16 mile before pushing on at the halfway stage to win classily in 5:18.17 from the Loreto Kilkenny pair of Ella Richardson in second in 5:30.67 and Annie McEvoy in third in 5:31.49.

Minor boys and girls

Two of the stars in the minor girls’ age group were Corinne Kenny (Gorey) and Aoibhin McMahon (St Vincent’s Dundalk).  Kenny (Gorey) went from the gun in the 800m and strode confidently to a comprehensive victory in 2:17.61.

McMahon (St Vincent’s Dundalk) was in record breaking from in the throws winning the shot put with 12.78m and the javelin with 31.64m – both record throws.

Michael Spillane (Clongowes) showed great style to win the boys 800m in 2:14.06, Michael Farrelly (St Fintan’s) won the 80m in 9.45 and the long jump with 5.70m.

Junior ranks impress

Patience Jumbo Gula (St Vincent’s Dundalk) continues show her rivals a clean pair of heels in the sprints with long striding Dundalk student securing the junior girls sprints double. She won the 100m in 12.45 and the 200m in 25.22.

Roisin Tracey (St Gerard’s) didn’t hang around in the intermediate girls 1500m building an insurmountable lead in the junior girls 1500m to win in 4:45.67 from Deirbhile O’Reilly (Mount Sackville) and

Theresa Kelly (Castlecomber) impressed in the hammer with 39.67 while Ella Duane (Cross and Passion) won the Pole Vault with a new record of 2.72m.

Emily McHugh and Maria Flynn (both St Mary’s Naas) both went under the old 1200m record with McHugh taking gold in 5:09.76. Flynn walked 5:18.03 with Rebecca Carroll (St Wolstan’s) winning the bronze with 5:44.31.

Lucas Moylan (Patrician Newbridge) won the junior boys’ 80m hurdles in 9.24 and then went on to score a big win in the high jump with an impressive record of 1.86m.

Inter and Senior stars

In the intermediate ranks Ciara Deeley (Loreto Kilkenny) won the 80m hurdles with an 11.79 second clocking. Amy O’Brien (Dominican College Wicklow) won the 1500m steeplechase with 5:22.82.

Alex Clerkin (Castleknock College) 13.53 won the boys 100m hurdles in 13.53 with Ruarcan O’Gibne (Colaiste Lu) winning the steeplechase in 4:38.45. Peter O’Connor (CBS Enniscorthy) and Eoin Reidy (Maynooth PP) were the respective senior winners in the same events with 16.19 and 6:13.48

Multi-event star Elizabeth Morland (Dunshaughlin) won the senior girls 100m hurdles in 15.67 despite a heavy fall. Eimear Fitzpatrick (Our Ladies Terenure) continued to show her expertise over the barriers in the 1500m steeplechase with a winning time of 5:05.84.
