Heaslip reigns supreme in the park

Shona Heaslip (An Riocht) was a welcome winner at the Garmin Great Ireland Run which also incorporated the National 10km Championships in the Phoenix Park today (April 15).

Heaslip provided the home cheer on a rainy day in the park and the Kerry woman crossed the line in 34:52 ahead of Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle) in 35:00 with England’s Gemma Steel third in 35:08.

Laura Shaughnessy (DSD) was fourth and rounded out the national podium in 35:15 while also giving Ireland the edge in the international match-up with England.

The men weren’t too far down the road having started a little later and it was England’s Oliver Lockley who won a thrilling finish in 30:18. Not far behind was Brian Maher (Kilkenny City Harriers) in second in 30:20, Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock) in third in 30:22, Sergiu Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers) in fourth in  30:23 and England’s Jack Gray in fifth in 30:25.

The spoils went to Ireland to retain the Sean Kyle Cup. It was 40-year-old Maher who took national gold with Clohisey and Ciobanu rounding out the national podium in second and third respectively.
