High Quality Competition on Day 1 of Juvenile Champs

Day one of the GloHealth Juvenile Championships took place in Tullamore on Saturday, 4th of July. Over 800 young athletes contested the national finals with a number of eye catching performances coming in the field and on the track.

Walsh Sets New CBP

Michaela Walsh (Swinford AC) was in tremendous form in the shot putt as she set a new championship best performance (CBP) of 16.43m. Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley AC) was on the double in Tullamore as she set a new CBP of 1.72m in the U16 high jump and also won the long jump with a leap of 5.83m. Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown AC) also won two national titles with a 13.76 clocking in the 100m hurdles and 5.91m in the long jump.

Hurdle Victory for Scott

Molly Scott (St Laurence O’Toole AC) dominated the U17 girl’s 100m hurdles setting a new CBP of 14.06 seconds. There was a good win for Tony Odubote (Ennis Track Club AC) in the U16 100m hurdles as he took the title in 13.34. Daniel Ryan (Moycarkey Coolcroo AC) a clear winner of the U17 title in a time of 14.13 seconds. Ryan added the long jump title later in the programme with a winning leap of 6.60m.

Exciting 800m Races

Chinie Izuchukwu of host club Tullamore Harriers and Roland Surlis (Annalee AC) went head to head in the U19 800m with Roland just getting the better of the Tullamore athlete taking the win in a time of 1.57.28. Amy Hamill (Glaslough Harriers AC) won the 800m title in 2.17.08 as Louise Shanahan (Leevale AC) signed off her juvenile career with a win in the U19 800m in a time of 2.15.13

Brian Flanagan (Clonliffe Harriers AC) and Alison Armstrong (Celtic DCH) won the U19 3,000m steeplechase titles in times of 9.40.11 and 11.35.64 respectively.
