Impressive Performances at the GloHealth AAI Games

The 2015 outdoor track and field season began in earnest today (17th May) at the GloHealth AAI Games in Santry Stadium. The event was held in cool and windy conditions with impressive performances coming in the field and on the track. RESULTS 

Youth Athletes Impress

Youth athlete Michaela Walsh (Swinford AC) was a class apart in the women’s hammer event as she launched out to an impressive 58.87m

Another Youth athlete impressing was Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown AC) as she sped to a 13.80 clocking in the 100m hurdles despite the -1.9 headwind.

Field Events

Sarah McCarthy (Mid Sutton AC) had a busy afternoon jumping 5.98m (+3.5) in the long jump and winning her section of the 200m in 25.01. Sean Breathnach (Galway City Harriers AC) was close to his personal best when winning the shot putt with a throw of 17.11m.

On a windy day in Santry Ian Rogers (Clonliffe Harriers AC) made the best of the conditions to win the pole vault with a clearance of 4.80m. Eoin Sheridan (North Westmeath) launched the discus out to 54.17m which is a B-standard for the European Junior Championships.

Sprint Races

Times in the sprint events were affected by the strong headwind with Marcus Lawler (St Laurence O’Toole AC) and Steffi Creaner (Celtic DCH) winning their 200m races in 21.79 (-1.9) and 24.53 (-4.2). The later 100m races saw Stephen Gaffney (Rathfarnham WSAF) win the men’s race in 10.92 (-2.1) and Sarah Murray (Fingallians AC) fastest in the women’s section running a time of 12.14 (-1.9).

Craig Lynch (Shercock AC) contested all three sprint events winning the 400m in a time of 48.03 having earlier recorded times of 11.02 (100m) and 200m (22.07). Sinead Denny (Dundrum South Dublin AC) was a clear winner of the 400m in a time of  55.01

The sprint relay events were the final action on the track with the youth girls’ team taking the victory in a time of 46.38 and one of the junior men’s team running out the winners of the men’s relay in a time of 42.15.

Middle Distance

There was a clear cut win for Harry Purcell (Trim AC) in the 800m as he stormed clear over the last 100m to win in a time of 1.52.17. Maryann O’Sullivan (St Abbans AC) ran a personal best of 4.30.66 to win the women’s 1500m as Kevin Kelly (St Cocas AC) won a tight men’s 1,500m in 3.54.39.
