Irish Team Off To A Flyer In Baku

The Irish Team competing at the European Youth Olympic Trials in Baku have been performing brilliantly over the last two days. The trials will brings together the best Youth Athletes (16/17 years of age) from all across Europe to compete in a variety of track and field events. The following performances have been achieved so far:

  • Roseanna McGuckian (City of Lisburn) ran 24.56 to qualify for the final of the 200m. Phoebe Murphy (Clonmel AC) finished 10th overall with a time of 24.69, just missing out on a place in the final.
  • Pierre Murchan (Celtic DCH) ran faster than he ever has before to finish a brilliant 6th in the 3,000m in a personal best of 8.32.59
  • Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown AC) was unfortunate to hit hurdle six but still managed to finish 10th overall in the 100m hurdles in a time of 13.94
  • Andrew Barkley (City of Lisburn AC) finished 16th in the Discus with a throw of 50.84m, Eoin Sheridan threw a big personal best of 58.44m to qualify automatically for the final of the Discus.
  • After qualifying brilliantly to make the final Adam King (Iveragh AC) placed 11th in the hammer event. In qualifying he threw a massive distance of 70.59m. James Williams (Shercock AC) threw a distance of 64m to finish sixth in his qualifying group.
  •  Both high jumpers Donagh Mahon (Gowran AC) and Keith Marks (Cushinstown AC) also qualified automatically for the final clearing 2.02m
  •  Louise Shanahan (Leevale AC) comfortable qualified for the final of the 800m running a time of 2.10.71
  • Michaela Walsh (Swinford AC) threw a personal best in the Shot to also qualify for the final
  • In the hammer Aoife Vaughan Witts (Borriskane AC) threw 53.48m and In the Shot Anne-Marie Torsney (Fingallians AC) threw 12.80m, both just missing out a place in their respective finals.
  • William Crowe (North Sligo AC) qualified for the final of the 1,500m after placing 5th in his heat in a time of 4.03.73.
