Manning and Healy just miss out on final

POSTED:

It was an early start and an agonising exit Cliodhna Manning and Phil Healy in the heats of the 100m at the European U23 Athletics Championships. With just three heats, it was all to play for to make tomorrow's final with the first two in each qualifying automatically along with two fastest losers.

Manning (Kilkenny City Harriers) went in heat 1 and finished third in 11.79 seconds after coming through in the second half of the race. It was a nervous wait then to watch the following two heats with Phil Healy (UCC) also coming up in heat three. Healy had a good first half of the race to put herself in contention – ultimately finishing fourth in 11.81. Unfortunately both missed out by the narrowest of margins. The final qualifier Irene Siragusa of Italy nipped the last spot with 11.77. Manning and Healy finished 10th and 12th overall.

McGuigan Places 9th

Dempsey McGuigan felt a little indifferent with his 9th place finish in group A of the hammer qualifying. He threw a best of 65.09m and ended up finishing 13th overall.
