McMahon launches exciting championships in store

400m Hurdles standout Christine McMahon (Ballymena &Antrim) was on hand to launch the GloHealth National Senior Track and Field Championships in Morton Stadium this weekend (June 25/26).

The Ballymena & Antrim athlete produced a classy performance at an EAP meeting in Geneva two weekends ago posting a new personal best of 56.42 seconds in the 400m Hurdles.

McMahon’s time moved her to number four on the Irish all-time list and qualified her for the European Athletics Championships Amsterdam in July. Even more impressive was that she had just recently finished her Dentistry degree in Queen’s University Belfast.

“I was delighted with my performance so soon after finishing my exams,” said McMahon who won her latest race in adverse conditions in Nivelles, Belgium last Saturday in 58.13. She will now look forward to retaining her national title this weekend.

“The nationals are always a great weekend and I’m looking forward to trying to retain the national title,” said McMahon who was an Irish dancer in her formative years.

A number of Ireland’s best athletes will be on show including Thomas Barr (Ferrybank), Mark English (UCD), Ciara Mageean (UCD) and the most decorated national medallist Kelly Proper (Ferrybank). For the list of entrants for the championships click HERE and for the relay entries click HERE

The championships will be live streamed for the first time on both days by nTrai who captured the viral footage of Phil Healy’s (Bandon) glorious relay leg at the University Championships back in April. Healy will be competing again this weekend which promises to have more thrills and spills that will also be captured by an RTÉ highlights package on the Sunday evening.

GloHealth’s CEO, Jim Dowdall is looking forward to what promises to be an engaging championships with a big summer ahead. He said:

GloHealth has added greatly to the experience of the championships since coming on board as our title sponsor. I’m also excited with the addition of live streaming this year along with a highlights package from RTE on the Sunday evening. I look forward to seeing some great performances and good crowds at the championships.”
