Michaela Walsh Sixth in Shot Put at Youth Olympics

Michaela Walsh (Swinford AC) produced a fine performance in the Shot Put final at the World Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China throwing a personal best of 15.69 to place 6th. This improved on her personal best of 15.59m she set when qualifying for the A final.

Adam King (Iveragh AC) was 8th in the Hammer final with 71.49. King also had a great qualification round for the final throwing a new personal best of 71.91m.

Earlier in the day it's was a credible 3rd place for Roseanna McGuckian (City of Lisburn AC) in the 200m in B Final running 25.15 (-0.4). In the heats she ran 24.77 to finish 3rd, placing 10th overall across the three heats. 

Yesterday Louise Shanahan (Leevale AC) ran a personal best and claimed an impressive 6th in the final of the 800m in 2.08.29. This improves on 2.08.75 she set when winning gold medal at the European Youth Olympics in Utrecht, Holland last year showing her ability to perform at championships. The race was won by Martha Bissah of Ghana in 2.04.91, Shanhan was the third European across the line.

Eoin Sheridan (North Westmeath AC) finished 13th overall in Men Discuss Final with 51.19 and placed fifth in the B final.

Jacqui Freyne Junior High Performance Manager said:  “It is a great achievement  for these young atheltes to have qualified from the European Olympics in Baku in June to compete in World Olympics in Nanjing and then to have come to the world stage and perform so well.”

Freyne added “I would like to extend a thank you to Garry Power, their extremely hard-working team Coach/Manager and to all the OCI support team who have helped the athletes with their final preparations over the last two weeks as well as the athletes own Personal Coaches, clubs and parents for helping them to prepare them for these championships.”
