Irish 400m Athlete David Gillick Retires from International Athletics

400m athlete, David Gillick (Dundrum South Dublin AC) has today announced his retirement from an outstanding athletics career. The Dublin athlete is a proven championship performer winning back to back European 400m Indoor Titles in 2005 and 2007.

He began his senior international career as a member of the 4x400m Irish team that won the bronze medals at the 2004 World Indoor Championships in Budapest. One of the finest moments of his remarkable athletics career came at the 2009 IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Berlin when he finished sixth in the final.

He is the national record holder in the 400m indoors (45.52) and outdoors (44.77)

President of Athletics Ireland Ciarán Ó Catháin commented “I would like to wish David all the best in his retirement on what has been a remarkable athletics career.  He is an inspiration to all of our athletes through his achievements in athletics".

Athletics Ireland CEO John Foley commented “David has been a fine ambassador for our sport. His athletic achievements speak for themselves; these along with his dedication and commitment to our sport during an outstanding athletics career are to be celebrated. All of the Irish athletics community wish him the best. “
