Sophie Meredith Captures Gold

Sophie Meredith (St Marys Limerick) and Moycarkey Coolcroo AC duo David and Anna Ryan took on high quality fields at the English Pentathlon Championships in Sheffield from the 14th-15th of March. The three young athletes acquitted themselves very well with Meredith producing a stunning set of results to win the overall U15 title.

Meredith battled it out with Rhea Southcott (Leeds City AC) across the five event competition with particularly pleasing performances coming in the long jump (5.42m) and high jump (1.63m) for Meredith. There was only eleven points separating the two athletes going into the final event of the day, the 800m. Sophie pulled out all the stops to cross the line in 2.32.43 accumulating a total point’s score of 3,418 for the win. Anna Ryan finished in 22nd place with a score of 2,536 points out of field of 44 competitors. The experience will stand to both Ryan and Meredith as they go forward in their combined event careers.

Fourth Place for David Ryan

David Ryan was contesting the Octathlon event over two days in Sheffield which consists of the 60m, long jump, shot putt, high jump, 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m events. He displayed great consistency across all the events to record an overall point’s score of 4,131. The total points amassed by Ryan placed him in fourth place overall in a high quality field.  Ryan recorded times of 7.47 (60m) and 8.79 (60m hurdles) which meant he scored over 700 points for both of these events, he also went over 6m in the long jump to collect valuable points on his way to a fourth place finish.

GloHealth Juvenile Indoor Championships

Next up for these athletes will be the GloHealth Juvenile Indoor Championships which take place in Athlone on the 21st and 22nd of March.
