Three Athletes Set for the IAAF World Youth Championships

Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown AC), Michaela Walsh (Swinford AC) and Nadia Power (Templeogue AC) will contest the IAAF World Youth Championships in Cali, Columbia which take place from the 15th-19th of July. The competition in Cali will be of the highest quality with the world’s best youth athletes contesting the various track and field events.

Morland has been selected to go in the 100m hurdles and heptathlon events in Columbia. Morland has been in superb form this year which includes setting a Irish Youth Record in the Heptathlon with an impressive score of 5.612 points. Morland will also contest the 100m Hurdles event having clocked a fast time of 13.70 seconds on the 22nd of April in Dublin.

Walsh on the Double

Walsh is also doubling up at these championships as she goes in the hammer and shot putt. Walsh has made huge progress this year setting new personal bests in both events.  The Swinford AC athlete threw 58.93m recently at the GloHealth Junior Track and Field Championships in Tullamore on the 5th of June. Walsh has also exceled in the shot putt circle launching it out to a new personal best of 16.46m on the 30th of May at the Irish Schools Championships.

Power Makes Breakthrough

Power’s breakthrough came at the BMC meet in Watford on the 27th of June when she smashed her personal best with a time of 4.24.62. The time qualified her for the world youth championships and signified a big step forward for the talented south Dublin based athlete. Power has also been impressive at the domestic championships this year including an impressive kick over the final 400m to win the senior girl’s 1500m title at the Irish schools championships.

Irish Athlete Timetable

Morland will begin proceedings for the Irish athletes in the heats of 100m Hurdles on the 15th of July followed by Power and Walsh on the 16th in the 1500m and shot putt events.
