Walsh and Lawlor Named Athlete of the Meet At Tailteann Games
Michaela Walsh (SM&P Swinford) and Sean Lawlor (Kylemore College) were named athletes of the meet at the 2014 Aviva Tailteann Schools Interprovincial held in Morton Stadium, Santry on Sunday, 21st of June.
Walsh & Lawlor Impress
Walsh launched the hammer out to massive distance of 59.92m to add over nine metres to the old record of 50.32m set by Alice Akers in 2012. For good measure Walsh returned later in the programme to win the Shot Putt with a throw of 15.06m, another championship best performance (CBP).
Lawlor was the standout performer in the boy’s sprint events as he stormed to victory in the 100m and 200m events. Lawlor recorded a time of 10.88 in the 100m and set a new CBP in the 200m with a time of 21.67. Megan Marrs (Strathern Belfast) proved the fastest in the girl’s 100m as she ran a time of 11.71.
11.30 for Scott
Molly Scott (Scoil Conglais) ran the perfect race in the 80m hurdles on her way to recording a new CBP of 11.30 with Clodagh O’Mahony (Laurel Hill) second with a time of 11.59 and Elizabeth Morland (Dunshaughlin C.C) third in a time of 11.83
Aisling Forkan (Sm&P Swinford) completed a classy double with victory in the long jump with a jump of 5.81m and in the 300m in a time of 39.51.
Mustafa Nasir (Holy Faith) timed his kick to perfection as he too set a new CBP of 1.53.98 in the boy’s 800m. In the first year of the event Alison Armstrong (Coolmine C.S.) was a clear winner of the 1,500m steeplechase in a time of 5.18.86, which is now the CBP for this discipline.
Sheridan Sets New Mark
Eoin Sheridan (St Finian’s) added exactly 2m to the old record in the boy’s discus when he threw a distance of 54.24m to win the event. Orla O’Brien (Ursuline Waterford) impressed in the javelin event by winning the competition with a throw of 43.12m (CBP) as did Maria Carey (St Mary’s Newport) who leapt out to 11.65m in the triple jump another new CBP.
Keith Marks (Ashbourne C.S.) was the only athlete over 2m in the high jump as he comfortable won the event with a clearance of 2m.
Relays
As always the day concluded with a thrilling set of relay events. Leinster dominating the girl’s 4x100m, boy’s 4x100m and boy’s 4x400m with the Connacht girl’s 4x300m proving the best in that event. The next fixture on the schools calendar will be the SIAB Schools International to be held in Cardiff, Wales on the 19th of July.
