U20 preview

Ireland’s underage rising stars will be on show with some looking to seal selection for the IAAF U20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland. There will also be some of the European U18 team competing.

The sprints continue to take centre stage with the 100m and 200m promising some exciting battles and fast times in the offing.

Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght), Molly Scott (St. L. O'Toole) and Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn) are among those listed in the women’s 100m with Ciara Neville (Emerald) and Davicia Patterson (Beechmount Harriers) listed in the 200m.

David McDonald (Menapians) goes in the U20 men’s 100m where there is a host of good competitors while Aaron Sexton (North Down) is down for the 200m. The pair had a fantastic tussle at the Irish Life Health All Ireland Schools’ Championships over 100m and 200m.

The women’s 400m could see Ciara Deely (Kilkenny City Harriers) take on Davicia Patterson.

There should be some good battles in store in the middle distance events with Jo Keane (Ennis Track), Sophie O’Sullivan (Ballymore Cobh) and Alex O’Neill (St Cronan’s) in the women’s 800m while Darragh McElhinney (Bantry) and Charlie O’Donovan (Leevale) will be keen contestants in the men’s 1500m.

Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley) has been in brilliant form of late and will look for new heights in the high jump.

Multi-event star Kate O’Connor (St Gerard’s Dundalk) is listed in the javelin with other leading field eventers including James Kelly (Finn Valley) in the shot, Brendan O'Donnell (Lifford Strabane AC) in the hammer, Ryan Carthy Walsh (Adamstown A.C.) in the High Jump, Niamh Fogarty (North Westmeath A.C.) and Marguerite Furlong (Adamstown A.C.) in the junior women’s Discus.

Orla O'Connor (Waterford) and Niamh O'Connor (Celbridge) are two of the leading contenders in the junior women's 3,000m race walk.

U23 preview

The U23 age group sees some new arrivals into the category including Cillin Greene (Galway City Harriers) in the mens’ 100m and 200m.

Roisin Harrison (Emerald) is also a new entrant into the age group and will be aiming to do well in the women’s 100m and 200m.

Matthew Behan (Crusaders A.C.) will look to add his second U23 men’s 110m Hurdles title to his collection with the Dublin hurdler continuing to get faster.

Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown) will look to win her first U23 100m hurdles title and is also entered in the long jump.

Adam King (Iveragh A.C.) will be looking for a good performance in the hammer as will Sam Healy (Leevale A.C.) in the long jump.

Michaela Walsh (Swinford) will be another of the stars on show in the women’s hammer, shot put and javelin.

Nadia Power (Templeogue) and Garry Campbell (Dunleer) are two of the leading middle distance entries in the women’s 800m and men’s 5,000m respectively.

It promises to be an exciting day of action even with the heatwave expected to continue.
