Fit4Life Interview Series: Star of Laune Athletics Club

POSTED:

When & how did you start Fit4Life in Star of the Laune AC?

We are a rural athletics club in Mid Kerry serving the parishes of Killorglin, Beaufort, Cromane and Glenbeigh. We began approx. 10 years ago when a number of local people wanted to take up running for leisure. Coordinated by SOTL. Year 1 we had approx. 70 members which caused great excitement.

How do you organize Fit4Life sessions?

We follow an 8-week Couch to 5km programme annually at beginning of April to finish around June Bank Holiday weekend. Country Roads so evenings must be bright, thus reason for April start. The program involves approx. 30 mins session each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening. Our couch to 5k program is just the beginning for most runners as we continue to meet up 3 times a week for the rest of the year, running between 5 and 8K.

How do you encourage the members who are less interested in running?

The great thing about our group is that there is no pressure involved. Everyone is encouraged to run at their own pace, and nobody is ever left behind. Lots of people think that once you run a 5k then you have to progress to a 10k or half marathon. With our group this is not the case. If you are happy with running a 5k and have no intention of running longer distances, then you are still an integral part of our group. However, if someone does wish to go longer then we have the experience and expertise to help and encourage them in achieving their goals.

Have you any standout memories for Fit4Life in Star of the Laune AC?

The standout moment each year is definitely seeing the elation and pride in the runners when they complete their first 5k, a fete that seemed impossible to them just a few weeks prior. It is also a very proud moment for the trainers, knowing that you have helped them achieve this personal goal. Other standout moments are when some members completed their first half marathons in Tralee 2015, Dingle 2017 and first marathon in Dublin 2018.

What are the benefits of running Fit4Life in your club/community?

There is great camaraderie within our group and many lasting friendships have been formed over the last 10 years. It is great for anyone that’s new to the parish to get to know some like minded people, get fit and have a bit of a laugh at the same time. We also have an annual Christmas get together and some social outings during the year.

What advice would you give any club or individuals interested in participating or starting Fit4Life?

It is a great testament to all of the people involved that it is still going strong after 10 years. There is not a whole lot of work involved in co-ordinating this program. Many hands make light work.
