Action at the World University Games concluded this past weekend with a record five-medal tally by Irish track and field athletes during the week's programme. Early in the week, Derval O'Rourke made the journey from a rain drenched Helsinki to a sun drenched Izmir and took a bronze medal in the 100m hurdles. Her Leevale clubmate Ailis McSweeney won a silver medal later that evening in the 100m. A great evening for Cork athletes. Paul Hession was another athlete who found the sunnier Izmir more conducive to sprinting and he won a bronze in the 200m. Then Jolene Byrne, after finishing sixth in the 1500m, finished a battling third in the women's 5000m the next day. Finally, Derval O'Rourke, Anna Boyle, Ailish McSweeney and Emily Maher combined to take bring Ireland into third place in the 4x100m relay and completed this remarkably successful championships for Ireland.
