Mageean wins in Watford; records in Oordegem, Euro Clubs

Ciara Mageean (UCD) won the 1500m at the British Milers Club in Watford in 4:09.10.

There were a number of good performances at the IFAM meeting in Oordegem, Belgium.

Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle) ran a European Athletics Championships B standard with a third place finish in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase in 9:53.00.

Gerard O’Donnell (Carrick on Shannon) and Matthew Behan (Crusaders) were just outside the B standard (13.85) in the 110m hurdles with times of 13.88 and 13.92 respectively. John Travers (Donore Harriers) was also just outside the B standard in the 5,000m (13:42.00) winning his race in 13:43.76.

Some of the U20 and U18 athletes were the right time of qualifying standards with Ciara Neville (Emerald) and  Gina Akpe-Moses (Blackrock-Louth) running World U20 standards in the 100m of 11.63 (+0.8) and 11.68 (-1.4). Akpe-Moses won her race.

They went even better in the 4x100m relay alongside Molly Scott (SLOT) and Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght) to a new national U20 record of 44.15 seconds which was also put them number three on senior all-time list.

Darragh McElhinney (Bantry) ran a World U20 A standard in the 5,000m with 14:11.80.

Sarah Healy (Blackrock) smashed the Irish youth 1500m record with a time of 4:13.32 and will be a strong contender at the European U18 Championships in Gyor, Hungary in July. Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght) ran 23.94 while Miriam Daly (Carrick on Suir) 61.88 in the 400m hurdles – both European U18 standards.

Halle throws

Tadgh O'Muircheartaigh (Dunboyne) was one of the highlight performances at the Halle Throws in Germany winning the U16 javelin with 63.30m – an Irish Best performance.

Clonliffe Harriers' men finished 9th in Group A of the European Clubs Championships in Birmingham while St Abban’s women finished fourth in Group B in Tampere, Finland.
