McCormack and Clohisey win national 10km titles

Fionnuala McCormack (Kilcoole) swept to victory to retain her national 10k title at the SPAR Great Ireland Run today in a solo time of 33 minutes and 30 seconds in the Phoenix Park today.

McCormack also breasted the tape to win the event outright for the first time and concludes a successful racing spell where she finished fourth in the New York half marathon and posted an Olympic 10,000m qualifying standard in Stanford.

It was an Irish clean sweep with second and third place going to Deidre Byrne (Sli Cualann) in 34 minutes 41 seconds and Maria McCambridge (DSD) in 34 minutes 52 seconds. McCambridge guided her club Dundrum South Dublin to the team title. Last week McCambridge ran 2:56 in Milan for the marathon and will attempt another marathon in the coming weeks.

Commenting on her win Fionnuala said: “I’m delighted to have crossed the finish line in such a great time and of course to have shared this moment with an Irish crowd. It’s great to show them my form ahead of Rio later this year. It was a fantastic day here at the Phoenix Park and I look forward to seeing some of the same along with brand new faces next year.”

Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock) won his first national 10k road title but was pipped for overall glory by England's Andy Maud who won in 29 minutes 55 seconds. Kevin Maunsell (Clonmel) was third overall and second in the national 10k in 30:23. Brandon Hargreaves (DSD) bagged national bronze and led Dundrum South Dublin to the team title making it double victory for the Southsiders.

The winner of the SPAR Great Ireland Elite Mile was John Travers (Donore Harriers) in 4:11. Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers) won the schools mile in 4:32.
