JUVENILES DELIVER ON THRILLING DAY 2 OF INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Those in attendance in Athlone today were treated to some thrilling indoor athletics action on Day 2 of the Irish Life Health National Indoor Juvenile Championships (March 20th).

A host of championship records fell across the course of the day, including the U19 200m CR of Lauren Cadden which had stood since 2018. It was Lucy-May Sleeman (Leevale AC) who would break the record in a blistering time of 24.24 CR, doubling up on the 60m gold medal which she collected yesterday. Sleeman was pushed all the way to the line by Kate O’Connell (Lucan Harriers AC) who crossed in 24.74.

Leon King Abor (Boyne AC) would take the U19 Boys 200m title in a winning time of 22.44. Darragh Murphy of Limerick AC was second in 22.66, with David Oghuvbu of Naas AC third in 22.82.

The pole vault competitions provided some record-breaking performances on Day 1 of the championships, and Day 2 continued the trend with Una Brice (Leevale) posting a CR of 3.50m in the Girls U19 pole vault. Brice broke the previous 3.35 CR of Ciara Hickey which had stood since 2018.

There was also an amazing performance from Ava Rochford in the U18 pole vault competition, setting a new U18 pole vault CR of 3.45m, improving on Ellen McCartney’s 3.30m from 2016.

Back on the track, Adam Nolan (SLOT) set a new CR in the Boys U19 60mH final, clocking 8.08 to claim the gold medal. Lucy Mc Glynn of Tír Chonaill AC stormed to her U19 gold in the 60mH final in 8.87.

Maeve O’Neill of Doheny AC provided arguably the performance of the day in taking the U19 800m title. O’Neill continued on from her brilliant 2021 season to post a big CR of 2.08.80, taking over from Ciara Everard’s 2.09.74 from 2008.

Jack Kelly (Tallaght) took the Boys U18 800m title with a performance which was just as impressive, crossing in a CR 1.52.38. Kirsti Charlotte Foster added the 800m title to yesterday’s 1500m gold medal in taking first place in the Girls U18 final in 2.13.63 for Willowfield Harriers.

The U18 long jump final saw Max O’Reilly take gold with a best jump of 6.23m, while Kieran Cooper of St. L. O'Toole AC claimed gold in the U19 long jump with 6.34m.

Orla O'Sullivan added to Leevale’s medal haul with gold in the U17 triple jump final (10.76m). Daniel Quirk secured top of the podium in the U17 Boys final for Greystones and District AC with 12.21m.

The 3rd and final day of the 2022 National Juvenile Indoor Championships takes place on Saturday April 2nd
