Athlete Commission Established

Following the submission of Expressions of Interest and subsequent vote from interested athletes, Paul McNamara HP Director nominated the following seven representatives to the Board for their approval as the interim Athlete Commission. The Board unanimously approved the following athletes to the commission at their recent meet on Tuesday 15th February 2022.

  • Walks Representative: Cian McManamon
  • Jumps Representative: Michael Bowler
  • Throws Representative: Colin Quirke
  • Cross Country / Road Representative: Kerry O’Flaherty
  • Track Representative: Cillín Greene
  • 6th Representative: Aoife Lynch
  • 7th Representative: Katie Kirk

The primary responsibilities of the Commission are:

  • To act as a voice for international athletes.
  • To ensure strong channels of communication are in place to ensure athlete specific issues are highlighted at the appropriate level of the organisation.
  • To support the work of the Athletics Ireland Board and organisation.
  • To ensure strong international athlete advocacy.
  • To provide an avenue for international athlete grievances to be considered.
  • To act as advocates for Athletics Ireland.

As per the Athletes Commission Terms of Reference here the initial term of the commission will be until the 31st of December 2022, and initially members will be appointed by the Board, on the recommendation of the HPD to establish this important forum.
