RELAY TEAMS SELECTED FOR DAY 5 OF EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ireland have selected two strong relay teams for tomorrow’s 4x100m (men) and 4x400m (women) heats at the European Athletics Championships in Munich.

The men’s 4x100m relay team is set to take to the heats at 9.00am. The men’s line-up includes recent 100m record-breaker Israel Olatunde (UCD AC), as well national 200m champion Mark Smyth (Raheny Shamrock), U23 200m champion Colin Doyle (Leevale AC), and national 100m silver medallist Joseph Ojewumi (Tallaght AC) who clocked a 10.44 in June.  The team will start from lane 2 and will bid to secure one of the 3 automatic qualifying places for Sunday’s final. It promises to be a burn up from the gun and the national 4x100m record of 39.23 could be yet another Irish record under threat at these championships.

Men’s 4x100m Team Order:

  1. Israel Olatunde
  2. Mark Smyth
  3. Colin Doyle
  4. Joseph Ojewumi

The women’s 4x400m relay team will also be in action tomorrow morning (10.51am), boasting another strong Irish relay line-up including last night’s 400m finalist Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC). Adeleke will be joined in the team by experienced global final performers in Phil Healy (Bandon AC), Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock), and Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport AC). The 4 athletes selected all rank within the top 6 on the Irish all-time 400m list. The team take their place in the second of the semi-finals at 10.51am and will face up against strong opposition from Netherlands, France, and hosts Germany.
