Irish Throwers set for European Throwing Cup

POSTED:

Seven Irish athletes will be taking to competitive action this weekend at the European Throwing Cup in Split, Croatia 8th-9th of May. This team includes both under-23 and senior athletes competing across Discus, Hammer, Javelin and Shot Put.

Rising field event star Nicola Tuthill will look to continue her progress on the back of a year where she stole the headlines in August 2020 with her incredible success in the women’s Hammer at the National Championships in Morton Stadium. Just 16 years old at the time, Tuthill won her first senior title in style – setting a new PB of 60.04m, smashed the Irish U18 women’s hammer record and also recorded the second longest throw in the world by an U18 in 2020.  The Bandon AC athlete will be in action in the women’s Hammer (U23) on Saturday evening.

Four-time national champion Stephen Rice is also in action in Split. The Clonliffe Harriers AC athlete is set to go in the men’s Javelin also on Saturday evening.

The 1st and 3rd place Shot Put medallists from the 2020 National Championships are also set to compete, with Micheala Walsh (Swinford AC) and Casey Mulvey (Inny Vale) scheduled for the senior and U23 competitions respectively.

Three-time national senior champion Niamh Fogarty (Raheny Shamrock) is confirmed for the Discus (U23), while Tipperary athlete Sean Mockler is going in the Hammer (U23) on Sunday.

Dempsey McGuigan (Hammer) completes the Irish team competing this weekend. The Finn Valley AC athlete will be in action on Saturday.
