MASTERFUL WEEKEND OF ATHLETICS AHEAD

POSTED:

The national athletics schedule sees a return once again to the TUS International Arena in Athlone this weekend (Feb 5th) for the 123.ie National Masters Indoor Championships.

A host of familiar names are set to return to indoor championships action across the busy schedule, while others will be aiming to claim their first national masters titles come Sunday evening.

Adrienne Atkins of Raheny Shamrock AC and Michelle O’Mahoney from North Clare are sure to go well in the 1500m. O’Mahoney claimed the 2022 title in an impressive 5:43.10.

Joe Gough (West Waterford AC) MO65 will be on the medal hunt once more. The Waterford record breaker is entered in the 200m, 400m, and 800m and will be tough to pass in the 800 if reproducing last year’s winning 2:25.80.

John MacDermot (Sligo AC) will take to the 200m/400m events and will look to defend last year’s 200m indoor sprint title.

Ger Cremin (An Riocht) will take on the two lap 400m in the MO40 race once more, while the An Riocht athlete will also go over hurdles in the 60mH decider.

Verena Fenlon of St. Josephs AC set a shot put new record WO50 of 6.29m last year and will be back once again to defend her title.

Mayo’s Martin Peyton (Mayo AC) claimed gold in the Shot-Put and the Long Jump MO70 last year and returns for yet another tilt at national honours on Sunday.

The evergreen Pat Naughton from Nenagh Olympic also returns for a busy day of competition as he looks to add to his nearly 400-masters-medals.
