Rhasidat’s record run at classy Leinster schools

Rhasidat Adeleke (Pres Terenure) broke a long-standing intermediate 200m as the girls stole on day 2 of the Irish Life Health Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships in Morton Stadium today (May 19). 

Adeleke had duel over the 100m and 200m with her friend Patience Jumbo Gula (St Vincent’s Dundalk) where she held the upper hand with fine performances. Full results of the event are HERE

The Terenure schoolgirl won the intermediate girls’ 100m in 11.60 and then backed up with a record 24.11 (-1.2) in the 200m to surpass Michelle Walsh’s record set in 1978. Jumbo Gula (St Vincent’s Dundalk) settled for silver in both with respective times of 11.68 and 25.45 seconds.  

Niamh Fogarty (St Joseph’s Rochfortbridge) had a record throw in the senior girls’ discus with 49.31m which was also a B standard qualifier for the World U20 Championships this summer.

Aoibhinn McMahon (St Vincent’s Dundalk) had a good intermediate double in the intermediate girls’ shot put and javelin with marks of 13.35m and 41.36m. Ella Duane (C & P Kilcullen) scored a record in the intermediate girls’ pole vault with 2.91m.

Back to the sprints and it was Israel Olatende (St Mary's Dundalk) storming to gold in the intermediate boys’ 100m with Michael Farrelly (St Fintan's). Farrelly returned to win gold in the 200m in 23.00.

David McDonald (Wexford CBS) had an impressive senior boys’ 100m and 200m double with times of 10.81 and 21.66.

Ciaran Carthy (St Michael’s College) and Jack Mitchell (Pres Carlow) scored tough 400m hurdles/400m doubles. Carthy won the intermediate section with times of 57.02 and 50.42. Mitchell won the senior with 54.51 and 49.81.

He returned at the end of the day and nearly clawed back a scintillating 4x400m relay for Pres Carlow. They had to settle for silver behind Castleknock Community College who won in 3:28.22 to Carlow’s 3:28.60.

Castleknock Community College also won the senior girls’ 4x300m relay in 2:50.55 with Molly Browne on anchor who won the 800m earlier in the day in 2:14.40.

Ciara Deely (Loreto Kilkenny) impressed in the senior girls’ 400m with world U20 qualifier of 54.99.

All Ireland Schools’ Cross Country champion Efrem Gidey (Le Cheile) created history by lapping the entire field in the 5,000m to win in 15:24.43.  

Sarah Healy (Holy Child Killiney) had a facile win in the senior girls’ 1500m 4:42.11.

The overall winning teams in the girls section were St Peter’s Dunboyne in the minor, Loreto Kilkenny in the junior, Alexandra College in the U16, St Vincent’s Dundalk in the intermediate and Mount Anville in the senior.

The winning boys’ teams were Willow Park in the minor, Belvedere College in the junior, Terenure College in the U16 with Belvedere College taking home the intermediate and senior titles to boot.
