Spring Throws set for State of the Art Templemore AC Facility

The new state of the art throwing facility in Templemore AC is set to host the opening of the outdoor season with the Spring Throws competition taking place this weekend. Over 100 registered athletes will compete across the Javelin, Hammer and Discuss at this year’s Spring Throws, with events kicking off from 11am. 

In the Discus Niamh Fogarty (Raheny Shamrock AC) is the favourite for the Women’s Senior competition, having recently represented Ireland at the European Throwing Cup in Leiria Portugal last month where she came 10th at 49.81m. Following on from Europeans, Fogarty won the University of Birmingham Winter Throws competition at 49.96m, closing in on her Personal Best of 53.73m. 

Rising star Cian Crampton from Edenderry AC will be a strong contender for top spot in the U16 Discus, having secured a new PB of 46.86m while competing in Sweden this year. 

Also competing in the Discus is Youghal AC’s Barry Healy who will compete in the master’s men’s 035-49 category. At the Dunboyne Winter Throws Meet in February this year Healy won the master’s discus event reaching 35.57m.

The Hammer competition is set to be one to watch with over 40 registered entries, a host of strong athletes are set to feature such as Simon Gailligan (Clonliffe Harriers AC) and Brendan O’Donnell (Lifford Strabane AC),  both will be the ones to watch in the senior’s competition. 

Gailligan won the Dunboyne Winter Throws, with 55.68m in February this year. Throughout the 2021 season, Gailligan competed to podium finishes such as winning the AAI Summer Games and the Northern Ireland & Ulster Senior Championships. 

O’Donnell had a bounty of podium finishes last year, winning the Irish U23 Championships and claiming silver in the Northern Ireland & Ulster Senior Championships.  

Templemore AC’s own Genevieve Rowland will also compete in the hammer and discus for the women’s masters O35-49 category. At the 2021 Tipperary Track and Field Championships Rowland won the Senior Women’s Discus, 25.70m, before coming second in the Hammer, to club mate Fiona Hennessy. 

The spearhead behind the Templemore AC project John Dwyer will also be competing across all 3 events also. 

Conor Cusack (Lake District AC) will be one to watch in the Senior Men’s Javelin, having come 7th in the U23 European Throwing Cup in Portugal last month reaching 68.90m, the Connacht Star will be looking to itch closer to his PB of 72.13m this weekend. Clubmates Oisin Joyce and Diarmuid Duffy will also be ones to watch in the U18 Javelin category. 

Aoibhin McMahon (Blackrock Louth AC) will also be one to watch in the Women’s’ U20 cocategory. McMahon is the current National Juvenile Champion in the Javelin and after a strong indoor season in the shot put this year, she is sure to match her indoor success throughout the outdoor season.
