Tarmon NS expands to host future Athletics activities on Synthetic Track in Roscommon.

Tarmon NS has an ambitious expansion plan that includes a 300m synthetic running track on the school grounds. The area is already laid with foundations and is awaiting temperatures of above 10 degrees before the rubber compound is laid in the next few weeks.

While also welcoming an opportunity to incorporate initiatives like the daily mile and multi sport activities at the school Mr Kieran Dowd, the school Principal also realises the huge benefit of having local volunteer coaches on hand to support the athletic progressions of the community.

Principal Kieran Dowd has further plans to add Long jump and shot put facilities, but has presently exhausted this year’s funding. The School had a festival of themed running as they started on their Daily Mile quest recently, with many dressing up in costumes to enjoy the activity.

Shane Donlon from Castlerea Crusaders is excited about the expansion of both his own club and their coaching team and the excellent facilities in what will be the County’s first synthetic track.

With further funding Tarmon NS is expected to be a hotbed of athletic excellence and will be a great asset for the county of Roscommon in years to come.

There is a Little Athletics Coaching course planned for late April 2020 when the synthetic surface will be laid and ready to host a series of training and competition events in the summer of 2020.

This Little Athletics course aimed at parent volunteers and older juveniles that is a great introductory course for those working with U13 children, as it focuses on fundamental movements and numerous activities that underpin the headline athletics events. Registration is via this link.

Roscommon has recently seen a massive participation expansion and several new clubs have evolved in the last couple of years. The most recent being Reeside Athletics club in Lecarrow.

Tarmon N.S is situated 4km North-East of Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. The late Mrs  Reeba Walker and the O’Rourke family in a gesture of enormous generosity kindly donated land for the expansion of the Tarmon Sports fields. This has been fenced off for use as a playground and the excellent new sports facilities.
